Description: evergreen shrub; native to Spain and especially adapted to long periods of drought. Low, compact growth with aromatic, gray-green foliage and pale violet flower spikes in summer.

Position: full sun and lean, well-draining soil


Uses: medicine, culinary- savory dishes, stuffing, herbal tea, liqueurs and bitters


Winter Hardiness: to 0 F and below


Drought: adapted to 4 months of summer drought


Distribution: Cental and E. Spain

Care: no special care needed

Notes: formerly considered its own species, S. lavandulifolia, but currently classified as a subspecies of S. officinalis
