Phlomis 'Edward Bowles'

Description: evergreen shrub; raised and named by Hilliers Nursery of the UK in 1967 and thought to be a hybrid of P. fruticosa and P. russeliana. Aromatic heart-shaped leaves and long stems with up to four whorls of two-toned yellow flowers in summer. 

Height: to 4 ft. Spread: to 5 ft.

Phlomis 'Le Sud'

Description: evergreen shrub; a French selection thought to be a hybrid of P. fruticosa and P. longifolia. Vigorous, rounded growth with narrow, silver-edged leaves and bright yellow flower whorls from late spring into summer.

Phlomis 'Lloyd's Variety'

Description: evergreen shrub; considered to be a selection of P. grandiflora by British Phlomis authority, Jim Mann Taylor. Dense, rounded growth with aromatic foliage and whorls of fragrant yellow flowers in summer.

Phlomis 'Sunningdale Gold'

Description: evergreen shrub; likely named for Sunningdale Nurseries Ltd. of Surrey, England. Textured green foliage that becomes covered by a golden-yellow indumentum in summer as an adaptation to prevent water loss. Whorls of two-tone flowers, yellow lower lips with bronze-orange hoods, in summer.

Phlomis fruticosa 'Quilted Leaf'

Description: evergreen shrub; an attractive form of P. fruticosa with beautifully textured foliage and oddly fragrant whorls of yellow flowers in summer and sometimes again in fall. Very vigorous and tolerant of hard pruning.

Phlomis fruticosa 'Toob'

Description: evergreen shrub; collected by UK plantsman, Nick Macer as P. angustifolia and named for the "toobular" shape of its leaves that fold upward in as a response to hydric stress. Whorls of yellow flowers in summer.

Description: evergreen shrub; rounded growth with aromatic, gray-green foliage that becomes silver-gray in summer. Whorls of large yellow flowers on long stems in summer.

Description: evergreen shrub; endemic to the Balearic Islands despite the confusing species epithet (Linnaeus had received the holotype via Italy, ugh). Rounded growth with aromatic foliage and whorls of dark pink flowers in summer.
