Description: perennial; wavy dark green leaves with a strong, sweet chocolate-mint flavor reminiscent of the candy after which it is named.

Mentha pulegium

Description: perennial; an aromatic mint species from the Easten Mediterranean with spearmint-scented leaves and mauve flower clusters in summer. Used by ancient Greeks and Romans as an insect repellant (pulegium in Latin refers to fleas for which it was used as a remedy), as a culinary herb, and in medicine. Known as menta romana in Rome and popular as a flavoring for lamb and tripe. An essential ingredient in the Algerian dish, batata fliou.

Common name(s): Corsican mint


Description: perennial; an herb native to Corsica, Sardinia, and Montecristo. Mat-forming with strongly aromatic peppermint-scented leaves and very tiny flowers in summer. Popular between pavers and as a companion plant in vegetable gardens. Traditionally used as a flavoring for crème de menthe, though now the flavorings used are mostly artificial.
